Explore One of A Kind creations of imagination and art, exclusive to Yeena Yoon Jewellery

Inspired by her architectural background, Yeena Yoon has a unique approach to design which is constantly in search of interesting spatial composition and material expression. Her wearable art often explores the concept of hidden treasure that can shape-shift according to its use. Her pieces are often presented as a single sculptural piece where it can be worn in various ways.

Story of Umbra:

Design of the Umbra piece started by exploring the technique of facet. How facets are perceived by the shadow cast by light. At its centre, the piece has the natural octahedron diamond that was found in the ocean and the hand-cut black jade surrounding the piece. As in most of these interchangeable pieces, they are wearable earrings that have elaborate and simple versions. The piece plays with the symbolic value of ‘preciousness’. The diamond stays in a raw state and the black jade has been facetted to bring out its subtle luster.

Story of Covet:

Design of the Covet piece started by exploring the concept of monument. A mini sculptural object that celebrates one’s achievements whether its a mini milestone or marking the sense of time in one’s life. In that, I wanted the sculptural object to embed jewelleries in it so that each piece could be taken apart and worn which would embody the symbolic value of the ‘monument’. The piece allows the wearer to be in charge of how the piece is displayed and worn and that the owner is the only one that knows the hidden treasure within.

A Journey

Take a glimpse at the journey that goes into creating a unique piece of limited edition jewellery. Here, we invite you to discover the journey of our creative process.

Love of the Material: Inspiration

My journey of limited edition jewellery often starts from looking at the rough stones and having a feeling for what they could possibly be. Inspired by Louis Kahn, an architect who believed the materials he used had their own sense of destiny, new geometries and unexpected possibilities can be drawn by honouring the material and glorifying its maximum potential.

My design creates fine jewellery that explores the idea of preciousness, by using stones and gold in different, unexpected and less traditional ways. Juxtaposing traditional craft skills with the innovative use of materials, enables me to search for new forms and states of material expression.

Thinking By Hand

In order to capture the essence of design, I often use my hand to guide me through the thought process and channel my inspiration. It is often through three-dimensional sculpting using Plaster of Paris or cutting and folding. I also use drawing and overlay the stones to get the feeling of proportion.

Detail

I believe that good design lies in attention to detail that looks effortless.

Every design comes with its own challenges, whether it is being interchangeable or bringing out the best qualities of the material. This means finding the right balance in proportion and also coming up with ingenious tailor-made details that are unique to each piece. I find exploring through making prototypes enjoyable and deeply rewarding when all the challenges are solved. The final result offers a truly bespoke piece, from concept to completion.
